This study investigated sociological dimension of alcohol habit and consumption in Turkey by assessing the monthly and annual alcohol consumption habits and expenditure of households in Turkey in accordance with certain socio economic and demographic factors. According to results the average alcohol consumption rate for over 72.000 households analyzed over the 12 years between 1994 and 2006 is 8%. The households that consume alcohol on a regular basis spent a monthly average of 32 TL on alcohol between 2003 and 2006. The average monthly alcohol expenditure was 26 TL in 2003, 31 TL in 2004, 42 TL in 2005, and 42 TL in 2006. Monthly income, education, and gender have a statistically significant positive effect on alcohol consumption. Alcohol consumption increases symmetrically with the increase in the level of education and income; however, never exceeds 15% even in the highest income bracket.
