Öğrencilerin kalıcı öğrenmelerinin kavramsal anlamanın gerçekleşmesi ile oluştuğu bilinmektedir. İçerisinde çok sayıda soyut kavram barındırması sebebiyle fen konularının kalıcı öğrenilmesi daha zor olabilmektedir. Bu sebeple fen öğretimi sürecinin temel hedefi öğrencilerde söz konusu kavramsal anlamaların doğru şekilde oluşmasını sağlamaktır. Bireylerin bu soyut kavramlara yönelik kavramsal anlama düzeylerinin belirlenmesi, fen öğretimi sürecini daha iyi şekillendirebilme konusunda önemli ipuçları sunabilmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, öğretmen adaylarının bir fizik konusu olan ve çok sayıda soyut kavram içeren “Elektrik ve Manyetizma” konusundaki kavramsal anlama düzeylerinin belirlenmesidir. Çalışma 2016-2017 öğretim yılı güz döneminde bir devlet üniversitesinin Fen Bilgisi Öğretmenliği programında öğrenim görmekte olan toplam 77 öğretmen adayı ile yürütülmüştür. Veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen, açık uçlu sorulardan oluşan “Elektrik ve Manyetizma Kavramsal Anlama Testi” kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada, öğretmen adaylarının “Elektrik ve Manyetizma” kavramlarının bazılarına ilişkin eksikliklerinin bulunduğu, kavramların bazılarını ise diğer kavramlar ile ilişkilendirme noktasında sorun yaşadıkları belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca belirlenen eksik öğrenmelerin büyük oranda uygulamaya dayalı süreçlerden kaynaklandığı tespit edilmiştir. Çalışmada bu doğrultuda lisans düzeyinde daha etkili bir fizik eğitim süreci sağlanmasına dair çeşitli öneriler getirilmiştir.
