Accepting the past is an active process involving the internalization and integration of past experiences into general positive mental representations. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the past representations and depression. 83 (46 women, 37 men) aged 55 years or older participated to the study. As expected, the positive and negative past representations were co-related with depression, self-esteem, and negative affectivity. It was found that the negative past representation was a consistent predictor of ongoing depression. In addition, the results of SOBEL test indicated that negative affectivity mediated the relationship between depression and positive and negative past representations. The effect of the negative past representation on depression was still significant, after the effect of negative affectivity was controlled. Key Words: Accepting the past, positive and negative past representations, depression.
