Abstract:

The aim of this study is to research psychometric features of the developed hopelessness of maths scale. In the first term of 2012-2013 academic year, this scale prepared as 35 items has been applied to 342 different kinds of high school students in Diyarbakir central district. The construct validity of the scale was exemined by an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). After the examinations by EFA, two items of the scale was omitted. According to the analysis on the rest 33 items, It was determined that the scale was 2 factor structure. One of this determined factors is that “Pessimism and despair for the future”. The other one is that “Positive expectations for the future. It was also defined that the total internal consistency coeffient of the scale is .95 and reliability coefficent based on test-retest method is .88. Within item discrimination in the hopelessness of maths scale was picked up on item total correlation. It was stated that scale’s recovered total-items correlation is ranged from .41 to .78. In the studies of the scale’s convergent validity, according to the data obtained from Pearson ProductMoment correlation, r=73(p<01) strong and signification relationship was found between high graded reliablevalid 10-item maths anxiety scale and hopelessness of maths scale developed researcher. In the light of all the analyzes it can be refered that hopelessness of maths scale is a valid and reliable assessment instrument in order to measure the level of secondary school students’ self despair of maths
