Baron Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall, who is one of the pioneers and representatives of the German orientalists, besides his scientific and literary activities as a bureaucrat acted as a bridge between the Ottomans and Austrians. Hammer had the opportunity to become familiar with his field when he was in the Ottoman Empire, and mostly in Istanbul between 1800 and 1806, except a year that he spent in London and Vienna. He had relationships both with the Ottoman State and with the contemporary Turkish scholars as well as scientific institutions by correspondence. It is possible to follow this relationship in the Ottoman archival documents. This study aims to follow up Hammer's life and works with the help of these documents.
