The end of the Cold War, 11 September events and 2008 August War were important turning point interms of the US's position in the South Caucasus. Following the end of the Cold War, the position of the US in the South Caucasus has gradually strengthened and the increasing globalactivity of the US in the post-September 11 era reflected towards the South Caucasus. However, those steps of the US was not welcomed by Russia, which was gradually consolidating its position and is considered a heir of the former Soviet Union. Russia was concerned about Georgia's policy during Saakashivili administration and sought "topunish" Saakashvili's pro-American stance. In this context, August 2008 war provided an opportunity for Russia to realize it, as well as to remind its presence to other former Soviet Republics. In this article, the effects of the August 2008 events to the position of the US in the South Caucasus are evaluated.
