Abstract:

In this article, the Gezi Park process as an example of a urban social movement will be discussed, the new social movements will be evaluated and the continuity and breakdowns of social movements through the historical processes in Turkey will be discussed by the Gezi Park example. At this point, the main claim in the text is that the new social movements have the same political quality as the little old social movements, where they differ from the old social movements in many points. Social movements, whether new or old, are political in terms of protesting a phenomenon in the social structure, and being in the civil field does not mean that it will not be political. After briefly examining the literature of new (city) social movements in this direction, the importance of the Taksim Square for the Turkish political life in terms of continuity in terms of time and space will be examined, and the actions of the Gezi Park will be examined in the context of the hypothesis we suggest. As a result, we will return to our basic hypothesis.
