Bu çalışmada, ilköğretim Türkçe ders kitaplarındaki masalların kelime ve cümle uzunluklarının sınıflara göre değişimi ve metinlerin okunabilirlik düzeyleri incelenmiştir. Metinlerin okunabilirlik düzeylerinin belirlenmesinde, Ateşman'ın Türkçe için Flesch'ten uyarladığı, kelime ve cümle uzunluğunu temel alan formül kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre; ders kitaplarına alınan masalların kelime ve özellikle cümle uzunluklarının, öğrencilerin sınıf düzeylerine göre düzenli bir artış göstermediği, cümle uzunluğu ve okunabilirlik açısından metinlerde altıncı sınıfa geçişte bir değişiklik olduğu, bunun dışında sınıflara göre belirli bir değişimin olmadığı söylenebilir. Genel olarak ilköğretimde, metinlerin okunabilirlik düzeyi kolaydır. Yapılan t-testi sonucunda cümle uzunluğu ve okunabilirlik yönüyle, yalnızca kademeler arasında anlamlı bir farklılık tespit edilmiştir.
