Abstract:

Altough Encümen-i Daniş has been accepted as first modern science and literature Academy of Turkey by most researchers, from historical point of view it can not be named as a science academy. In order to achieve this kind of scientifical and literary goals, it was established by the leadership Mustafa Reşit Paşa, and Cevdet Efendi’s contribution and great efforts. Encümen wasn’t able to achieve most of its practical objectives and its functional existence was relatively short. However, this limitation do not decrease the principal values of Encümen’s goals which had been announced for the first time as institutional level. From this point of view, Encümen expresses crucial turning point of Turkish modernization in the ninetenth century. Aims, such as; Simplificating Turkish language and forming its gramer rules, writing Ottoman History, encouraging of writing composition and translation works concerning ulûm and fünûn, and undertaking infrastructure works for the establishment of a modern university, set Encümen’s position in the Turkish history
