Abstract Esas olarak barışçı bir toplumsal varoluş içinde bireysel özgürlüğü garanti etmek iddiası güden liberalizm, modern bir siyasi doktrindir. Diğer modern doktrinler gibi liberalizm de esas itibariyle "Akıl Çağı"nın ürünüdür. Liberalizm tarihsel olarak Yeni Çağ'ın düşünce atmosferinde ve yeni toplumsal-siyasi formasyonların oluşmaya başlamasıyla birlikte ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu yeni düşünce ortamınınbelirgin özelliği, Orta Çağ'ın Tanrı merkezli toplum ve evren tasavvurunun terk edilmeye, geleneksel toplumsal bağların çözülmeye ve "doğru"nun (hakikatin) akıl yoluyla bulunabileceğine olan inancın yükselmeye başlamasıdır.
