Abstract enNon-university institutions, including science academies became important tools in the establishment and rise of modern science. Going back to the 16th century, science academies paved the way for many scientific discoveries through test and proof of experimental knowledge. The number of these academies, first established in Europe, increased in the West over time. The Ottomans attempted to create their first “science academies” in the 19th century, known as the Encümen-i Dâniş (Academy of Knowledge) and Cemiyet-i İlmiye-i Osmaniye (Ottoman Society for Science). The question is to what extent were these organizations academies of sciences ? In this article, the Ottomans’ concept of science academy, their achievements or failures in establishing such an institution are discussed in comparison with the European science academies. The issue has been studied only from the perspective of science and experimentation. Political, economic and social factors have not been considered in the present article.
