Özet:

Abstract enAll the dance figures belonging to the folk dances in the world are made up for various reasons. These figures are composed of a historical event, social behaviors as the result of reproduction, religious rituals from Paganian ages, the courtship of men and women, imitation of an animal in nature or a hunting event, the gist of a choreographic and aesthetic play. All the folk dances as the extent of religious rituals, however, resemble a semiotic receptacle of senses which the people of certain faith possess within their collective memories and come from their descendants’ perception of life. In the figurative context, the religious senses of these dance figures are also referred by the use of lyrics.In this study, the figures of Alevi semah are mentioned in this sense. The Alevi culture considered as the product of Anatolian territory and in hand with a variety of cultures from the philosophy of the Pythagoras to Mevlevi Order shares a kinship with these cultures. In many Anatolian beliefs including the cults, the whirling as an act of worship dates back to the Hittites.To sum up, the study will reevaluate the figures of semah which have a sense of values more than “praying by whirling in a rhythm” within the semiotic context
