Abstract enİvan Zaharov was an ordinary artist form Petersburg. Since there was a travelling trend among Russian elite andi ntellectuals, he had travelled to Constantinople in the summer of 1849 on deck of a navy ship despite his bad financial situtation. This had been a turning point for his life. Because Ottoman Sultan Abdalmaceddid invited him to Ceragan Palace to paint his childeren’s portraits. Zaharov’s portraits drew interest from sultan himself, Ottoman burocrats and artists. Zaharov had been paid well for his paintings by Sultan Abdalmaced and travelled to Greece and Italy witht hat money. Zaharov had became a famous artist on his return. Besides, Zaharov’s painting feflects his memoirs about his days in Constantinople. In those memoirs he wrote his observations on Ceragan Palace, Bosbhorus, Buyukdere, Galata and Pera. Ivan Zaharov has an excptional place among Russian traveller artists because he is the first Russian artist to hold audience in front of Ottoman Sultan and painted portraits of his children. In this study Zaharov’sobservations and impressions about Constantinople were revealed
