Abstract:

Abstract enTo our day the city that has most frequently been the subject in Italian cinema is Rome. Bearing a magnificent atmosphere and richness in the areas of history, culture and the arts, Rome is among the most important filmiccities. This work analyses the film La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty, 2013) directed by Paolo Sorrentino. The subject of the research is Rome’s representation in Italian cinema as a location. The result of the research maintains that after World War II Rome in Italian cinema is a naturalist décor where reality is put forth in a humanistic manner, poverty is documented, and the consequences of war and fascism are criticized. But then, 1950s Rome is portrayed as a nostalgic cine-fairytale city that is romanticized and idealized with the exalted and ecstatic “dolce vita” mythos together with the consumer society. In the film subject to the analysis Rome is resubmittedas a visual and poetic symphony representing “the great beauty” and honoring its archetypes in the Italian cinema with a moment of silence
