Abstract enThe new education system forced to make reforms in mathematics curriculum in Turkey. The purpose of this study is to interpret those changes in the line of an international mathematics assessment, specifically TIMSS 2011 assessment for the eighth graders. The middle school mathematics curricula written in 2009 and 2013 were analyzed in terms of their alignment with the scope of TIMSS 2011. The findings revealed that most of the content of TIMSS were initially taught during the seventh grade according to the old curriculum but they would be taught during the sixth grade in the new curriculum. In the TIMSS 2011 assessment, there are more items assessing the skills at applying level but in both curricula, the majority of the objectives are related to skills at knowing level. Furthermore, TIMSS 2011 results showed that most of the students failed in knowing type of items and the seventh grade subject matters.
