Abstract enThis study queries spatial borders in the context of facades and surface concepts in contemporary architecture. The concept of facade in the architectural history, has been the primary theoretical tool to express the approaches developed on the external appearance/ perception of the building. But from 19th century onwards, technological development caused by structural transformations in architecture, has been altered the borders radically in both theoretical and practical manners. This identifies a problematic in architectural theory. The changes that were influenced by new construction techniques and materials in the early modern architecture, are later influenced by computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques in contemporary architecture including near past. Although building production methods are completely different from pre-modern times, borders are still revealed in the context of meaning and limits of facade concept. This situation brings up a current problem that should be an interest of contemporary philosophical theories of architecture. Today, in practice, it is possible to mention many buildings exceeding their theoretical limits, meanings or content of facade concept. In this context, it can be said that new conceptual arguments are necessary to argue about border issue in contemporary architecture. This study analyzed the architectural content in-depth in the 19. and 20. centuries, and reconsidered the concept of surface as a conceptual argument to understand/comprehend building border qualities. In this context, the study summarized historical transformation of the facade concept on the one hand, and on the other, analysed the development of architectural meanings of the surface concept by architects and architecture of 19th and 20th centuries. As a result, quality of current border concept is evaluated.
