The road network which the Ottoman Empire had since its foundation period, had been sufficient to meet its transportation needs until nineteenth century. However, with also impact of the developments in Europe after the industrial revolution, existing roads have not been able to meet the needs. Railway started to be an important and powerful means of transportation all over the world since the nineteenth century, also started to be built in the Ottoman lands. In the last period of the Ottoman Empire, where the number of roads and motor vehicles were extremely limited, railways have become the only means of transportation. The railways operated by foreign companies have also been inadequate to meet the needs of the country at the beginning of the National Struggle. For this reason, the development of transport infrastructure in the first years of the Republic was regarded as a necessity by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk
