The issue of “being ummî” of the Prophet (P.B.U.H), throughout many centuries was always simply considered as illeteracy. Hence, based on the “ummî” characterization in The Holy Quran it was claimed that he was not able to read and write. However, if the term “ummî” as stated in The Holy Quran and The Bible -in the pre-Quranic Period- reexamined and reviewed more accurately it will become obvious that the meaning of this term does not relate to the qualification of literacy directly and moreover the term mentioned especially in The Holy Quran does not refer to the literacy status of The Prophet (p.b.u.h). Therefore the usage of “ummî” term in The Holy Quran and The Bible does not mean as “illeterate” but contrarily means that “he was not recipient of the sacred revelations or he was not one of whom given a holy book by God.” On the other hand, though there is no any evidence within the sources referring to His literacy but it is also not improbable. Considering the details of His life story, it is clearly understood that He was a highly cultured man compared the standards of Mecca during His period. He was considering the importance of literacy and therefore it is reasonable for him to be literate.
