Like the personal computers, the mobile phone has rapidly spread in the course of our basic everyday lives. The current study was undertaken to better understand the perceptions of cell phone usage among university students in İstanbul. The study adopted the qualitative (focus groups) approach, to examine issues arising from the popular social use of the cell phone. The data stems from a survey of Turkish University students aged 18-25. The data suggests university students have various feelings and attitudes toward cell phone usage. The results verify the importance of sociability and security as motives for cellular phone usage. University students use their mobile phones to call for help or report various dangers and emergencies.
