Mayyafariqin was conquered by Iyad b. Ghanm in 640 (H 19) through a peaceful agreement. In the course of the nearly four and a half centuries from its conquest by the Muslims to the fall of the Marwanids, it remained as one of the significant cities in the region of al-Jazirah. In the Abbasid era, its political significance particularly boosted during the periods when the region fell into the control of the Sons of Sheikh, the Hamdanids and the Marwanids. The city that was surrounded by unyielding walls made great advancement during the reigns of Sayf al-Dawlah of the Hamdanids, and of Nasr al-Dawlah of the Marwanids. In the meantime, the city turned to be a popular place where many scholars, poets and authors frequented. Although the Shiite was expanding in many adjacent states at the time, it maintained its Sunnite faith, and therefore this caused many Sunnite scholars to take shelter in it
