İskitler doğuda Çin seddinden batıda Tuna nehrine kadar geniş sahaya yayılmışlardır. Hatta onlar Kafkaslardan aşağıya inerek Önasya dünyasında da etkilerini hissettirmişlerdir. Onlar bozkırlarda güçlü bir bozkır imparatorluğu kurabilmişlerdir. Uzun zaman diliminde kurmuş oldukları imparatorluk varlığını sürdürmüştür. Birçok imparatorlukta görüldüğü gibi İskit imparatorluğu da kuruluş, yükselme, duraklama ve yıkılış süreçlerini yaşamıştır. İskit imparatorluğunun yıkılışının birçok nedeni bulunmaktadır. Bu nedenler arasında coğrafi, demografik, iktisadi, siyasi ve askeri faktörler sayılabilir. İmparatorluğun yayılmış olduğu coğrafya üzerinde hâkimiyet kaybedilmiştir. İskit yayılma sahası üzerinde imparatorluğu kuran unsurun nüfus yoğunluğu azalmıştır. İktisadi açıdan önem taşıyan otlaklar ve ticaret merkezleri ellerinden çıkmıştır. İmparatorluk üzerinde bulundukları coğrafyada siyasi hâkimiyetlerini kaybetmişlerdir. Askeri açıdan da savaş araç- gereçlerini geliştirememişlerdir. Böylece imparatorluğun yıkılış süreci hızlanmış ve İskit imparatorluğu son bulmuştur.
Scythians had expanded over a large area from the Great Wall of China in the east to the Danube River in the west. Hanging down through Caucasia they had even shown their effectiveness on the Frontal-Asia. They had founded a powerful steppe empire which survived for a long period of time. Like many similar examples Scythian Empire had experienced such periods as the foundation, rise, decline and collapse. There were several reasons of the decadence of the Scythian Empire namely geographic, demographic, economic, political and military. The empire had gradually lost its sovereignty as the percentage of its founding element in the total population decreased. Pasturages and the main trade centers got out of hand; new military equipment could not be developed and as a result the breakdown of the empire was quickened.
