The study was carried out to identify the leadership styles of music teachers basing on Mc Gregor’s X-Y Theory. Music teachers’ leadership styles were also investigated in relation to the type of (private/government) and the level of school they work (primary/secondary), their field (music) efficacy, perceived musical environment of the school and the level of satisfaction of being a music teacher. The population of the study is the music teachers who work in İstanbul. The sample of the research is consisted of 97 primary and secondary school teachers (72 women, 25 men) from the six different districts of İstanbul. Teacher Leadership Styles Scale developed by Deniz and Hasançebioğlu (2002) was used to measure the leadership styles of music teachers. The major results of the study are as follows: (1) Music teachers are found to be semi democratic, (2) Private school music teachers are more democratic than the public school music teachers, (3) Significant differences are found between the leadership styles of music teachers regard to their level of field efficacy, job satisfaction, having sufficient materials for music education.
