In this study, computer based and computer assisted instructional methods effect over success and retention of computer course has been investigated. Sample of the study is composed of 28 second grade primary education (day school) students that are studying at Tatvan Vocational Highschool in Bitlis Eren University. Experimental and control groups are formed in the class. Academic performance test, which is created by researcher is used as a tool for data collection. It has been applied as a pre-test before experiment, as a post-test after experiment and as a retention test after four weeks. Teaching of the topic "Basics of Microsoft Word" is performed by computer based instruction method on experimental group and by computer assisted instruction method on control group. Office 2007 visualized instructional set which is a product of Çizgi Tagem is used on experimental group. According to the findings of the study, computer assisted instruction method's contribution towards academic success and retention of knowledge on students is much more compared to the computer based instruction method.
