Struggling as a religious scholar (mudarris) at the outset of institutionalization on Islamic education, Ghazali’s career and research in terms of educational his-tory is extremely important. While reading his studies, it is likely to find judg-ments and critiques between the lines. There are the contemporary scholars (‘ulamâ) in the center of criticism of his study named Ihyâ. According to him, ‘ulamâ are the main reason for the moral decline in the community, and they moved away from the purpose on account of passion for financial gain although the main purpose of them is to glorify the good. The deviation from the social role of them conforms to French thinker Benda’s criticism, who criticized 19th century intellectuals and described the criticism as “treason”. We will consider the critiques in question throughout the article within the framework of this thought and line with Ghazâli’s autobiography named al-Munqız.
