This paper aims to discuss metacognition, which has especially been emphasized in recent years in relation to the subject of second foreign language acquisition.The method of this study, which presents a qualitative character, is the review of what has been obtained from relevant literature. Metacognition, an awareness of one’s own thought processes, plays a central role in the process of learning German as a second language after English. Becuse the first foreign language is a starting point for the learners who are learning the second foreign language. With metacognitive learning strategies, have learners knowledge about own learning, metacognitive system and structure. The learners benefit from not only their first foreign language English’s basic principles but also the habits and strategies in the process of learning German as a second foreign language.
