In this paper, we searched for the life and the works of Ali Shah b. Haji Buka Awbahi. He lived in 15. Century at the time of Husayn Bayqara in Herat, the Sultan of Turkistan. Ali Shah got a due reception by the eminent musicians of his time after his works started to circulate among musical masters. His major work, Muqaddima al-Usûl has two copies today. Hüseyin Sadeddin Arel as a hand writing manuscript copied one of them. His work, Usûl al-Vusûl is completely lost and hence has no copy today. We find behind his musical background some eminent names like Farabi, Avicenna, Qutbuddin of Shiraz, Abdulqadir Maraghi in general and Safiyyuddin Urmawi in particular. The genius of Ali Shah discloses itself particularly in his scholarly contribution to the works by his predecessors mentioned above. His contribution reaches its peak in his discussion of some theoretical issues on the music of his time. We can see this concretely in his invention of some maqam scales and in his construction of some synthetic (i.e., composed of two maqams scales) maqam scales which is a favorite subject for modern scholars of our time. In addition, he made some contribution to the establishment of new usûl (rhythms).
