Coğrafi Bilgi Sistemleri (CBS) pek çok ülkede coğrafya bölümlerine büyük avantajlar sağlamıştır. Özellikle ABD ve Kanada gibi ülkelerde görüldüğü üzere CBS ile bölümlerde yürütülen akademik çalışmalar daha derinlik kazanmış, CBS teknolojileri konusunda gerekli bilgi, beceri ve deneyim ile mezun olan öğrenciler ise mezuniyet sonrasında daha rahat iş sahibi olmaya başlamışlardır. Türkiye’deki coğrafya bölümlerinde ise durum farklıdır. CBS, Türkiye’deki coğrafya bölümlerinde 1990’lı yılların sonlarından itibaren yer edinmeye başlamıştır. Günümüzdeki tabloya bakıldığında coğrafya bölümlerinin pek çoğunda CBS laboratuarının olmadığı ve CBS derslerinin verilmediği görülmektedir. Bu durumda CBS’nin doğası gereği coğrafyacılara araştırma ve iş sahibi olma açısından sağladığı avantajlardan Türkiye’deki coğrafya bölümlerinde yeterince yararlanılmadığı görülmektedir. Bu çalışmada CBS’nin Türkiye’de coğrafyacılara ve coğrafya mezunlarına sağlayabileceği avantajların neler olduğuna özellikle ABD’den örnekler verilerek kısaca değinilmiş ve bu avantajlardan nasıl yararlanılabileceği konusunda bazı önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
