Learning and using English, the most widely used foreign language, in today's world has become a necessity. In Turkey some problems exist about it. The most important of them all is lack of motivation, which is not dwelled upon much. Our government schools don't seem to be able to deal with language teaching properly. As a result many people go to private courses to learn English. The aim of this study is to determine the problems of those who are learning English, the factors that motivate them to learn English, and how these factors differentiate according to age, sex and occupation. Survey method was used for the study. The sample group of the study is private language courses in Eskişehir and the students attending them. The receptions of the students were determined with a tool developed by the researchers. The data obtained was tested and compared with t test and variance analysis according to, sex, educational status and occupation.
