The purpose of this study was to examine leadership characteristics of elementary school principals as they relate to gender as perceived by teachers. Data were collected from 16 female principals, 26 male principals and 474 teachers in the city of Eskişehir, Turkey. The scale for this study, “Characteristics of Effective School Principals” (CESP), was developed and tested by the authors of this paper. The results of the study indicated that there were no differences between female principals' characteristics and male principals' characteristics.
