Abstract:

The purpose of this research is to analyse the question of correctness, reactions towards and consequences of the determination that “Ottoman/Turkish music is an artificial, imitation of Byzantine music and not has Turkish national elements, therefore it can not seen as a resource to create of our national music” which was said by Ziya Gökalp in his work “The Essentials of Turkism” under the title “National music”. Besides the purpose of this research is to reveal that wherein the Contemporary Turkish Music affected by national music establishment policies which constituted that result of these determinations. In this research, literature review method was used, the knowledges that acquired has been commented on the basis of historical realities and resources. In this research Ziya Gökalp’s ideas on national music and mistakes in these ideas analysed in addition to the ideas of those against him and support him and the correct knowledges has been introduced. Atatürk’s aim to execute the policies under those ideas on music revolution with their mistakes has been explicated by basing on the conditions of that time, his personal preferences and his statesman personality, reached an objective conclusion with confirmation of resources.
