Abstract:

The class concept arising from the categorization of individuals and societies due to their different characteristics is one of the topics that is constantly discussed and therefore on the agenda. This feature made it more advanced than other concepts in scientific and artistic fields. Because of this role the concept has taken over, many works have been drawn up in this context and class differences have been anticipated. One of the works to be mentioned in this sense is the Museum of Innocence. In this novel written by Orhan Pamuk, there are many findings that reveal class differences. First of all, the city, which hosts the various sections of the Nişantaşı and the Dukurcuma, is distinguished from each other. These differences, which appear to be revealed in the settlement, sub-structure and economic indicators of the first districts and appear to be spread into all areas of life, are revealed in the behavior, attitude and speech of individuals. Thus, the novel turns into a scene where the class concept manifests separate social categorizations. These arguments indicating class differences suggest that the novel should be read in the context of class concept. The novel mentioned in this study is intended to be studied in the context of the Nishantaşı-Dukurcuma in relation to class differences.

The concept of class which results from the classification of the different social and individual aspects has always been on the agenda as one of the most discussed issues. Therefore, the concept of class has been discussed in art and science circles more than any other concept. The concept’s popularity has led the researchers to analyze several literary works in terms of the class differences they reveal. Innocence Museum is one of those novels which could be analyzed in terms of the class differences it revelals. There are a lot of examples which demonstrate class differences in this novel written by Orhan Pamuk. Firstly, Çukurcuma Nişantaşı have different residents of differences social classes. The differences seen in the districts’ settlements, substructure and financial indicators, are also reflected in people’s attitudes, discourses and treatments. As a result of this, novel becomes a scene on which social classifications are discussed and narrated in literary style. These arguments which hint class differences suggest a need that this novel must be analysed in the terms of class differences. This work has focused on the differences within the novel and thus it is the production of the work-centred reading which studies these differences in various terms.
