İbrahim Edhem Paşa’nın (1818-1893) “Medhal-i ‘İlm-i Jeoloji” başlığını taşıyan makaleler dizisi, 1862-1865 yılları arasında Münif Paşa’nın (1830-1910) popüler bilim dergisi Mecmû‘a-i Fünûn’da tefrika edilmiştir. Münif Paşa, bu makaleler dizisini İbrahim Edhem Paşa’nın fizik, kimya ve mineralojiye dair eserlerinden ve onun ‘İlm-i Jeoloji adlı kitabından derlediğini belirtmektedir. Münif Paşa, makaleye, ‘Mukaddime-i ‘ilm-i jeoloji’ başlıklı bir giriş yazmıştır.
The series of articles by Ibrahim Edhem Pasha (1818-1893) with the title "Medhal-i 'Ilm-i Geology" was published in the popular scientific magazine of Munif Pasha (1830-1910) from 1862-1865. Munif Pasha points out that this series of articles is collected from Ibrahim Edhem Pasha’s works on physics, chemistry and minerology and from his book ‘Ilm-i Geology’. Munif Pasha wrote an entry to the article, 'Mukaddime-i 'ilm-i geology'. The article, because it is important in terms of geological research and studies, first provides information about the substance, the three states of the substance, the general characteristics, the heat, light, electricity, and other basic physical phenomena. Then again, chemical descriptions are made about the elements, gases, compounds, metals, amethals, acids, bases, and salts that are related to geology, gases and other elements. Then the oceans, the seas, the rivers, the lakes, the freshwater sources, the poles and the glaciers are introduced. The article ends with the information given about stones, their formations, their structures, their physical and chemical properties. This study points to the fact that Ibrahim Edhem Pasha’s works on geology and sciences are not available today, and it introduces the collection of his book on geology.
