Ayder’in doğal, kültürel ve sosyal değerleri turizm faaliyetlerinin temelini oluşturmaktadır. Bu nedenle turizmde çevresel ve sosyo-kültürel sürdürülebilir kalkınmanın sağlanması bölge için büyük önem teşkil etmektedir. Diğer yandan Ayder konumu itibariyle koruma ve yatırım temelli farklı statülere sahiptir; bu durum turizm merkezi ilan edilen bölgede paydaşların turizm sürecine katılımının önemini arttıran bir faktördür. Konuyla ilgili diğer bir önemli faktör de sürecin ve planlamasının temelinin iyi anlaşılabilmesidir. Bu bağlamda çalışma kapsamında sürece dahil olan 29 paydaşla derinlemesine mülakat yapılarak “sürdürülebilir turizm kalkınması” kavramından ne anladıklarının cevabı alınmıştır.
