Author:
Abstract:

The impact of socio-demographic characteristics on the tourism demand equation
2019
Author:
Abstract:

This study aims to reveal whether the socio-demographic characteristics represented by tourists’ income and education levels, age groups and income purposes have any impact on tourism demand for Turkey. The survey’s data set covers 24 countries, representing 77.6% of tourists arriving in Turkey in the period 2006-2017. The number of tourists from classed according to the socio-demographic characteristics, with the help of the Unity Corrected Cucumber Variable Smallest Quarter forecast, was estimated through the mouth-to-cout effect (the number of tourists from the previous year), the income level, the relative and residential price levels, along with the transport costs and the terrorism variables. The empirical findings of the study show that the number of tourists classified according to their socio-demographic characteristics react differently to the changes that occur in the describing variables listed above, but that the direction of these reactions is the same. Therefore, the conclusion is that in the design of Turkish tourism policies there is no place to take into account the socio-demographic characteristics of tourists. Furthermore, it has been found that the important determiners of international tourism demand for Turkey are the price level of residence with oral influence in order to indicate that consumer-oriented and competitive tourism policies should be monitored.

Estimation Of Tourism Demand Equation For Turkey: The Influences Of Economic, Social and Political Factors
2019
Author:
Abstract:

This study aims at revealing whether there is any influence of socio-demographic characteristics of tourists, which are proxied by levels of income and education, groups of age, and purposes of the visit, on tourism demand for Turkey. Dataset of the paper includes 24 countries representing 77.6% of total tourist arrivals to Turkey throughout period 2006-2017. The numbers of tourist arrivals classified by socio-demographic characteristics are regressed on word of mouth effect (i.e. number of tourist arrivals in previous year), level of income, and levels of substitute and relative prices as well as transportation cost and terrorism variables via Bias Corrected Least Squares Dummy Variable estimator. Empirical findings of the paper demonstrate that the numbers of tourist arrivals classified by socio-demographic characteristics give different responses to changes in the above-mentioned explanatory variables in magnitude, but sign of the responses are the same. Therefore, it is concluded that there is no need to take socio-demographic characteristics of tourists into consideration while Turkish tourism policies are designed. Besides, it is found out that the most important determinants of international tourism demand to Turkey are the word of mouth effect and the level of substitute price so as to imply that Turkey should follow customer-oriented and competitive tourism policies.
