Abstract:

Mustafa Suphi lived in a period when the Empire was in disarray in economic, political, and military terms. Parallel to the many ideas which were put forward in order to remedy the dismantling State, Suphi adopted different identities from Unionism (CUP supporter) and Turkism to Socialism. He completed his education in İstanbul and Paris, also worked as journalist and lecturer. His exile in 1913 led to deep effects on his mindset. Following the proclamation of 2. Constitution, he worked with CUP. However, due to pro-war policies of CUP, Suphi converted to Turkism. His ideas changed in Russia. As result of 1917 Revolution, he became closer to Bolsheviks and adopted socialism. In this new era, he tried to organize Turkish Communists abroad. According to Suphi, liberation of Anatolian people would have been result of socialist revolution. In order to complete this mission, he came to Turkey where he died suspiciously. In this study, the life of Mustafa Suphi, his views on Turkism and on socialism, and his position in the Ottoman socialist movement has been discussed
