Needs Analysis: Students’ Learning in Writing Scientific Papers

Abstract:

This study aimed to analyze the needs of students’ learning in writing scientific papers. Needs analysis was used to prepare for better learning. This type of research was a qualitative study using descriptive analysis method. Participants used in this study were 38 students and 4 lecturers who taught writing scientific papers course. The students and lecturers were spread in 4 universities in West Sumatra. The data in this study were obtained from tests, questionnaires, and interview guidelines. Data was collected by giving material test to write scientific papers. After the test was given, the next step was to give a questionnaire of writing scientific papers to students. Finally, conducting interviews with both students and lecturers related to the learning needs in writing scientific papers. After all data was collected, the data was analyzed using the content analysis method. The results showed that (1) Based on teaching materials viewpoint, the needs of students’ learning in writing scientific papers are the main material of systematic writing in scientific articles, examples of scientific articles, references relating to scientific papers. (2) Based the learning model viewpoint, the needs of students’ learning in writing scientific papers are fun learning, giving freedom, motivation, imagination, creativity, logical thinking, direct practice, and lecturer guidance. (3 Based on the learning evaluation viewpoint, the needs of students’ learning in writing scientific papers are direct evaluation in facing learning obstacles and evaluation that is carried out together. Therefore, students have diverse needs in writing scientific papers.
