Abstract:

As in many fields, there have been significant changes and innovations in the literature field. The poet-i Azam Abdulhak Hamid also turned his direction to the West during this period and was interested in French romanticism and Victor Hugo. A series of assessments on the subject (Rıza Tevfik, F. A. Tansel, Ziya Karamuk...) have been made, but most of them have been related to the general literary personality and style of the poet. It turns out that Hamid’s direction to French literature has two important reasons: the curiosity for novelty in poetry and the interest that French literature, and especially Hugo, sees in the light of Tanzimat. Basically, the great topics of romanticism, such as lyrism, nature descriptions, love, death, metaphysics, were largely combined with Hamid's poetic perception and style, if necessary, with his experiences and experiences (this love, especially the death of Mrs. Fatma). Their experience of life suffering similar to Victor Hugo (Léopoldine and Mrs. Fatma) has brought our poet to a poetic perception and attitude similar to Hugo. The differences and lyrism he sees in French poetry and especially Hugo poetry has increasingly attracted him to this area. He was even referred to as “V. Hugo’s revolt.” In our work we will refer to the partnerships of both poets, we will try to show their similarities.
