Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, Türk Edebiyatı’nın en önemli roman ve oyun yazarlarından biri olup eserlerinde inanç, ahlak, alafrangalık vb. konuları işlemiş, bunların yanında, derin ahlâkî ve sosyal eleştirilere de yer vermiştir. Farklı tiplerle olayların gülünç tarafını anlatan yazarın üslûbu, oldukça canlıdır. Hüseyin Rahmi’nin üzerinde durduğu konulardan biri de “mürebbiye” ve akabinde gelecek “ahlak” konusudur. Kendisine çok yabancı olan Batı medeniyetine hem yabancılık hem de hayranlık duyan Türk toplumunun yaşadığı ikilem ve değerlerin zarar görmesi sonucu kadının cezalandırılması, toplumsal bir travma olarak romanda işlenen bir konudur. Aslında bu mizahın altında derin bir trajedinin de yattığını bizlere gösterir. Hüseyin Rahmi’nin eserleri, Tanzimat sonrası dönemi konu alır ve âdeta bir ayna görevi görür. Kültürel geçişin ve değişimin yaşandığı bu dönem, özellikle Batı’nın etkisi altındadır. Değişimlere karşı toplumun ve kişilerin gösterdiği tepkiler, Mürebbiye romanı baz alınarak değerlendirilecek; dönemin büyük eleştiri ve tabu kaynağı olan mürebbiyelere, kültürel değişim karşısında nasıl günah keçisi muamelesi yapıldığı ve bu kadınların nasıl bir işleve sahip olduğu bu bağlamda yorumlanmaya çalışılacaktır.
