In this study, at the first stage food-poverty line is determined for urban areas in Turkey by utilizing the monetary approach and using year-2003 Household Budget Survey data. Then basing on per adult required calorie intake and the necessary food basket to provide this, household level minimum required monthly food expenditure is calculated. Poverty line is determined by using the clothing and accommodation expenditures of the households living under food-poverty line. At the second stage, by utilizing cross-section econometrics, the factors that may affect the possibility of being poor and poverty gap are analyzed. These factors are grouped under demographic, social and economic indicators however, as the unique contribution of this study, the specific impact of intrahousehold distribution of resources and income among man and woman is also analyzed. It is observed that women's economic and social status which improves with the resources that accrue to women, women's education level and her status in the job have a decreasing impact on the possibility of being poor and reduces the poverty gap.
