Günümüzde ergonomik yaşam mekânlarının oluşturulmasında oturma postürü önemli bir yere sahiptir. İnsanoğlu, yaşamını sürdürmek için gerekli bazı eylemleri yaparken bedenine binen yerçekimi kuvvetini en az düzeye indirgemek amacıyla başta oturma eylemi olmak üzere çeşitli postürler sergilemektedir. Bu nedenledir ki; birçok eylemin yapılabilmesi için ihtiyaç duyulan oturma mobilyaları da eylemin özelliğine göre ve doğal olarak toplumların geleneklerine, yaşam biçimlerine, çağın teknolojik olanaklarına hatta bireylerin cinsiyeti, yaşları ve sosyal statülerine göre tarih boyunca çok farklı şekillerde gelişim göstermiştir. Ancak, oturma mobilyasındaki en büyük gelişim antik dönemde Mısır, Ege-Yunan ve Roma uygarlıklarında görülmektedir. Bu uygarlıklarda oturma mobilyasının ergonomik olarak geliştiği ve çeşitlendiği görülmektedir. Tahtlar, iskemleler ve koltuklar krallar ve soylular tarafından kullanılırken; tabureler herkesin kullandığı bir mobilyadır. Oturma mobilyası sedir ve masa mobilyasının da gelişimini sağlamıştır. Bu uygarlıklarda oturma mobilyasının gelişimi Batı dünyasında ergonomik oturma mobilyasının gelişimi için bir temel teşkil etmiş ve bu mobilyaların özellikleri günümüz mobilya tasarımına yansımıştır. Oturma mobilyasının temel biçimi, ergonomik, üslup ve yapım özellikleri başta olmak üzere birçok özellik antik dönem oturma mobilyasından günümüze gelmiştir. Bu çalışmanın oturma mobilyası tasarımı konusundaki tasarım ve araştırma çalışmalarına yazılı bir kaynak oluşturması amaçlanmıştır.
Today, sitting posture has an important place in the creation of ergonomic living spaces. In order to minimize the force of gravity on its body while carrying out some actions necessary to sustain life, human beings exhibit various positions, especially sitting. That is why; the seating furniture needed for many actions were developed according to the nature of the action, and naturally, according to the traditions of the societies, their lifestyle, the technological possibilities of the age, and even the gender, age and social status of individuals. However, the greatest improvement in the living furniture is seen in the ancient periods of Egypt, Aegean-Greek and Roman civilizations. In these civilizations, it is seen that furniture is ergonomically developed and diversified. Thrones, chairs and seats were used by kings and nobles; stools were furniture used by everyone. Sitting furniture has also provided the development of couch and table furniture. The development of sitting furniture in these civilizations has been the basis for the development of ergonomic sitting furniture in the Western world, and the features of this furniture are reflected in today's furniture design. Especially, the basic form, ergonomic, stylistic and construction features of sitting furniture and many other features have come from the ancient sitting furniture to the present day. The aim of this study is to provide a written resource for design and research studies on sitting furniture design.
