Abstract:

Data mining is a method of extracting meaningful, useful and important information from huge volumes of data by automatic or semi-automatic techniques. Today, this method is effectively used in many sectors, mainly in the marketing, banking, insurance and medical sectors. One of the institutions where data mining practices can be used effectively is libraries, especially university libraries. The use of data mining practices for the purpose of developing services and policies is an important topic for university libraries. The large volume of data collected as a result of the processes in the library information systems, if analyzed by the university library by data mining techniques, is expected to reach information that will make a significant contribution to the library’s future services and policies. The aim of this study is to draw a general framework of data mining practices in university libraries and to draw attention to the advantages that these practices will provide. According to this purpose, the data covering the years 2010-2018 in the YORDAM Library Automation Program, which is used by the University of Kırklareli Library and Documentation Department, was analyzed with data mining technique. In this context, the distinguishing hierarchical accumulation technique, which is used from the methods of accumulation on data, has been used. A variety of tables were created using statistical data obtained from the created sets and the visualization approaches of data mining. The tables created were evaluated and identified the current status of the library, presented recommendations on its future services and policies. It is believed that the study will be a guide for the studies to be done with data mining technology in other university libraries in Turkey.
