Özet:

Turkey has been nominated for the Summer Olympics five times with Istanbul and has never won. The aim of this research is to reveal the reasons why Turkey is unable to host the Summer Olympics and its solutions are suggested in the light of the expert opinions. In the research, the method of conversation from the quality research was used. First of all, it was chosen by the sample method for thirteen people considered to be an expert in the Olympics. After a detailed scan of the literature on the subject, the questions to be used in the discussions are prepared semi-configured. The reasons for Turkey's failure to host the Summer Olympics and the solutions proposals are addressed to experts in individual and face-to-face conversations. These conversations recorded in electronic media with the approval of the participants were held between August 2018 and April 2019, in İzmir and Istanbul. The data obtained from the interviews is subject to identifying content analysis. From the data obtained from the talks, failure in the sport, failure to spread the sport to society, doping, political environment, wrong city choice, lack of facilities and infrastructure, the economic situation in the country and the lack of promotion of the country are seen as obstacles to Turkey's failure to win the Olympics. Recommendations for the elimination of these obstacles are classified as: the spread of sport to society, the more effective public institutions, the elimination of doping from the country’s sport, the establishment of a central sports system, and the emphasis on liakate within this system. As a result, the long-term steps that Turkey will take on the way to host the Olympics will contribute to the development of the country’s sports culture and increase the country’s success in international competitions.

Özet:

With its bidding city Istanbul, Turkey has attempted to host the Summer Olympic Games five times, but never won. This qualitative research investigates the reasons of Turkey’s failure in attempts to host the Games, and solution offers for the possible future biddings in accordance with the views of experts. A purposeful sampling technique was used to identify the thirteen experts that were asked to be interviewed for the research. After a comprehensive literature review, the semi-structured questions were prepared for the interviews. The three questions were about the reasons of Turkey’s failure in attempts to host the Games and solution offers for the possible future biddings. The individual interviews were carried out between August of 2018 and April of 2019 in İzmir and İstanbul, and tape-recorded with the prior permission of the participants. The data obtained from the interviews was evaluated by a descriptive content analysis. From the obtained data, eight categories were identified about the reasons of Turkey’s failure. These are; being an unsuccessful country in sports, not having a sports culture, doping prevalence, politics, wrong bidding city, lack of proper sporting facilities and infrastructure, economic status, and lack of promotion of the country. Likewise, the solution offers are; spread of sporting activities throughout the society, more active state constitutions, anti-doping struggle, and foundation of a central sports system and consideration of the officials’ competency in this system. In conclusion, it is foreseen that the long-term plans will contribute to the improvement of the needed sports culture in Turkey and increase the success of the country in the international sports competitions along with the prospect bidding processes.
