Abstract:

Izmit is a settlement where traces of permanent urban settlement that date back to 3rd Century B.C. are observed and that is in the position of the central district of Kocaeli province. It is geographically located at the coastline of Marmara Sea - Izmit Gulf and these are the lands that hosted great civilizations since the city included critical trade routes. Since it is neighbouring city of Istanbul and possesses seaway, railway-highway and airway transportation facilities, in addition to its historical backlog, the settlement that continues to extend also as an industrial and commercial city began to require certain renewals and adjustments to be made in urban areas in connection with the increasing population and vehicle traffic. In this study, the project that was designed for Izmit Bekirdere-Tricyol square upon the request of the Municipality of Izmir within the framework of the aforementioned requirements and that was implemented and then put into service is analyzed along with the altered meaning of the concept of the city square by giving examples.
