The first studies of American Indian narratives were made by Europeans who discovered America. These studies are records and publications which have been done by pilgrims, merchants or the military. After 18th century publications of which more textual, in the 19th century, there have been numerous scientific studies, and majority of them is related to North American Indian narratives. The first publications were made by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, Daniel Garrison Brinton, Edward Burnett Taylor, Thomas F. Crane, Lewis Spence, and Paul Radin. In the 20th century, scientific researches on The American Indian narratives started with the studies of Franz Boas, Stith Thompson, and Alan Dundes etc. In this article, the studies of North American Indian narratives are analysed in chronological order.
