Abstract:

Today, many settlements cited among the most important holiday destinations in a variety of countries have been converted to summer resorts by construction of various accommodation facilities and second homes. This conversion occurred along the coasts has drawn attention for a long time and became a matter which many geographers have emphasized. Diversification has also been observed in the phases of the coastal settlements, starting from visit of first tourist to the point they have individually become touristic resorts. In this respect, some researchers such as Young (1983) and R.A.Smith (1991) each have formulated developmental stage model suitable to their own observations. We also notice that the coastal resort settlements developed in our country have also gone through similar stages and acquired similar patterns. While they used to be small settlements showing other functions, they have lost those characteristics, sometimes partly and sometimes completely, to become holiday settlements and then they grow and become crowded (Timor, 2004; Özgüç, 2017). And city of Antalya has undergone a similar process and become a tourism settlement when tourism and recreational activities have started to develop throughout the country and thanks to a variety of its attractive aspects. This study deal with the city of Antalya in terms of tourism development models. Tourism function of Antalya have started to stand out and develop from 1950s on. However, even now we easily observe that the capacity limits have reached to critic levels. But “fashionable characteristic” as part of the city image should be protected as it is now. In this study, it is aimed to examine the sample tourism modeling and self-interest of the settlements, which have the function of Tourism. At the same time, giving direction to their planning through these examples will provide an advantage for the development of tourism destination.
