Feminist kuramcılar geleneksel sosyal hizmet teori ve uygulamasını cinsiyetçi olmakla eleştirmektedir. Feminist sosyal hizmet uygulaması feminist kuramın temel kavramları olan toplumsal cinsiyet, ataerkillik, kamusal/özel alan ayrımı gibi kavramları kullanır. Feminist sosyal hizmet bu çerçevede kadınların deneyimlerini başlangıç noktası olarak kabul eder. Geleneksel toplumsal cinsiyet rolleri ve ataerkilliğe meydan okuma bu uygulamanın diğer bir bileşenidir. Kadınların sorunlarıyla ilişkili farkındalıklarının yükseltilmesi ve güçlendirilmesi odağı nedeniyle bu uygulama geleneksel sosyal hizmet uygulamasına yönelik alternatif bir uygulama olarak tanımlanabilir.
