Abstract:

Journalist is the person who Access the source of news and information quickly, undertakes the mission of presenting the news and information obtained from such sources to the readers, or takes part in preparation of issuance of a newspaper or magazine; shortly, he/she is the one who transmits the truth to the public. General target of journalism programmes opened in our country is to produce graduates who can analyse the cause-effect relationships of events and the connections between people and events, who can transform the events into a media product by benefiting from the theoretical lectures and reflect the information without manipulating it, and who has a high level of knowledge and know-how thanks to the practical lectures. Moreover; as the profession of journalism requires an intellectual background, the programmes should include different lessons benefiting from closer disciplines such as sociology, politics, psychology, philosophy. In Turkey, communication faculties and journalism departments are established increasingly in order to provide education. It is a matter of debate whether such increase has an equivalent in the sector, how it can affect the quality of education, and the reflections of the intensity on programmes. In this context, while some faculties focus on practical lectures during providing journalism education, some faculties provide more theoretical education programmes. The aim of this study is to determine how the journalism education is in Turkey, and what kind of a method is followed in terms of curriculum in programmes. Within the scope of the study, curriculum programmes of journalism departments in undergraduate departments in communication faculties of state universities in Turkey will be examined, and intensity of practical and theoretical lectures, density of off-discipline programmes and coherence of programmes studied in journalism departments in Turkey will be handled. In the research, data will be obtained by means of scanning and document analysis. In today’s world, in which media develops and changes rapidly, the potential of journalism departments to respond to such change is among the subjects of the study.
