The creation of productive jobs is the key to economic growth, social development and improvements in living standarts. But there is a widespread belief that high rate of productivity growth can crowd out employment and thereby become a source of unemployment. This study aims to adress the existence of tmde-offs between employment and productivity growth in both developed and developing economies. For this purpose, we use a framework that focuces on relationship over the short and longer term, and pays specific attention to employment-productivity dynamics. Trade offs between employment and productivity exist in short term as the result of short run deviations and frictional changes in economy; In the lon¬ger term, economists expect that productivity growth and employment growth go hand in hand. After 2001, Turkey experiences slow employment growth and relatively high increases in labour productivity Our empirical analysis show that there is a negative and significant but not strong rela¬tion between productivity growth and employment growth in Turkey be¬tween 1961 and2005.
