Industrial sector has played a major role in Turkey’s post-1980 development period as the engine of the process. Although this process has been interrupted with a number of economic crises, as of 2008 industrial production constitutes one third of the GDP. This study evaluates activities of the private companies among Turkey’s Top 500 for the years of 2003 and 2008. In our evaluation the contributions of these companies to shareholders and to the Turkish economy are taken into account. We selected 2003 because it is the year in which the economy started to recover after the 2001 crisis, whereas 2008 is chosen as the recent global financial crisis emerged in that year. Therefore, the study also gives the opportunity to consider the effects of the 2008 financial crisis to Turkey. Some of the results derived are that; between the years 2003-2008 there was a decrease in the active profitability of the industrial sectors and the share of the sectors with high employment rates in total industrial production recorded a decline for the same period. The data from the annual surveys conducted by Istanbul Chamber of Industry, “Top 500 Industrial Companies of Turkey”, are used in this study
