Abstract:

In the 1999 Helsinki Summit, with the recognition of Turkey as a candidate country, a restoration in the relations between Turkey and the European Union (EU) has occurred, but the desired progress in the relations has not been. One of the factors determining the future of the Turkish-EU relations, referred to as a chroniced crisis agenda in recent years, is the support of the public to the full membership process. Therefore, it becomes important to determine the change in the public perception of the Turkish-EU relationships, which requires comparison of the research done in different periods. The first part of the three-party study, structured for this purpose, includes a literary scan of the results of the media and the public’s approach to the relations between Turkey and the EU, taking advantage of previous periodic studies. The second part is dedicated to discussions about the full EU membership process of Turkey. The third section (application) includes a comparison of two research results in order to get an idea of the public’s perception of the EU and how the approach to the Turkey-EU relations changed from 2008 to 2017. At the end of the study on how the representation in the media related to the relations of Turkey-EU is in relation to the public's approach to the relations of Turkey-EU, some recommendations on the necessary communication policies have been developed in order to ensure a healthy information flow in the relevant public.
